ST. EDMUNDSBURY WEAVING WORKS 1902 – 1931
The years on either side of The Great War were highly creative in the decorative arts. Here we showcase some of the fine handwoven silk textiles by the artist designer Edmund Hunter and his son Alec. Their work influenced the evolution of decorative design in the first half of the twentieth century and we chronicle both their interesting lives and artistic output. SAIL 475 c1896 is shown here.
Timeless designs from the Golden Age of the Decorative Arts.
Historical Background
Remarkably versatile, Edmund created his own unique and magical genre of designs for silk fabrics, textiles and wallpapers. Each told a story and many were drawn from his interest in astrology, symbolism, Celtic mysticism and ancient iconography.
Design Themes
Subtle, eclectic and rich, this canon of work is full of life and often portrays an enchanted world - the valuable legacies of two highly creative and productive careers. THE PALIO 1928 is shown here.
Woven Textiles
Edmund and Alec Hunter both designed and manufactured their bespoke fabrics in silk and natural fibres using traditional looms. Here is a selection of their fine woven textiles for which the firm was famous between the years 1902 and 1931. PINEGROVE c1911 is shown here.
