ST. EDMUNDSBURY WEAVING WORKS 1902 – 1931

The years on either side of the Great War were highly creative in the decorative arts. Here we showcase some of the fine handwoven silk textiles by the artist designer Edmund Hunter and his son Alec. Their work influenced the evolution of decorative design in the first half of the twentieth century and we chronicle their interesting lives and artistic output. SAIL 475 c1896 is shown here.

Historical Background

Design Themes

Woven Textiles

Edmund and Alec were also interesting as they didn’t just design but also manufactured these fine bespoke fabrics. They were woven in silk on hand and jacquard looms first in Haslemere then Letchworth.
